Posture of the week: Pranayama

Our pose of the week begins with the Standing Deep Breathing- Pranayama Posture. It is the first pose of the 26 postures of Bikram yoga. It is derived from the words Prana (meaning: life force) and Yama (meaning: control). If you are struggling with pent up stress or anxiety, this is the pose for you. Leave the hectic issues of everyday life at the door and clear your mind of any stress, or worry. With each deep breath, allow the flow of air to your lungs help to relax your mind and calm your body. Let go of the stress and allow yourself to focus on healing and positivity.  This pose is especially beneficial to the respiratory system and lungs. As you continue to practice this stance, focus on letting go of the negativity in your life and move your attention to gratitude and love. You will find yourself feeling more peaceful with each passing breath. 
Prevents respiratory issues
Prevents symptoms such as asthma, bronchitis, emphysema
Helps to expand lungs  to maximum capacity and promote air flow
Improves circulation and oxygenates blood
Calms the central nervous system, providing mental tranquility and relaxation

How to
Start by taking deep, slow breaths 
Gently stretch your arms and chest before you begin
Resume the position of the image below
Keep your spine straight and your stomach in, so that your rib cage protrudes slightly
As you exhale, tilt your head and neck back-*do not use your hands to push the head backwards; let your hands follow along with the movement of the head. There shouldn’t be any strain to the neck*
Shoulders should be kept in line with hips. Make sure to keep your hips forward (you’ll achieve this by slightly squeezing your butt)
When exhaling, make sure to breath out completely 
Do this pose for a few minutes, then move on to the next posture.

  • Helpful Tips

    Hydrate! Drink plenty of water before class

    Wear cool, comfortable clothing such as biking or running shorts and fitted tank tops or sports bras.

    Don't take class on a full stomach. Eat a light snack, if needed, before class, but nothing too heavy.

    Come at least 20 minutes early before your first class for registration.

    Don't be nervous. Most new students feel a little intimidated, but after only a few classes you'll feel right at home.
